Advocacy

Julie provides an Advocacy service to assist individuals with communication difficulties who have been assessed as in need of support. This support could be helping to develop their own communication methods which in turn would allow them to express needs and wishes themselves or it could be advocating on their behalf and then assisting staff to better support the person.

How can this be implemented?

The first step is to spend time observing the individual’s requirements and communication method , looking at the situation/other individuals involved. Then building a rapport with the person and from a point of mutual understanding, progress can be made.

One of Julie’s key characteristics is an approach of zero confrontation. She is adept at moving ‘undetected’ through a situation so that she can work solely to understand and assist. Gaining trust is such an essential part of this process, along with patience and the ability to adapt to the varying needs of the people involved.

Julies Advocacy services seek to ensure that people, particularly those who are most vulnerable  are able to:

  • Have their voice heard on issues that are important to them.
  • Defend and safeguard their rights.
  • Have their views and wishes genuinely considered when decisions are being made about their lives.
  • Explore choices and options.
